December 1st is World AIDS Day

1st December 2009 is World Aids Day. Target TB and its partner organisations around the world will be taking part in the global commemoration of World AIDS Day. The HIV/AIDS and TB epidemics are closely linked, with the poorest members of society particularly vulnerable to both diseases. TB accounts for 1/3 of AIDS deaths worldwide, despite TB being a preventable and curable disease.

Because TB is a disease which preys on weakened immune systems, an HIV positive person is 50 times more likely to develop TB than an HIV negative person. Untreated, TB can kill a person with HIV/AIDS in a matter of weeks. HIV and TB each speed up the progression of the other.

The World Health Organization recommends a coordinated approach to treat both diseases. Target TB is actively working with its partners on integrated approaches to address the needs of people affected by TB and HIV/AIDS.

The worldwide eradication of TB is paramount in the fight against AIDS.

Felicity Kendal becomes first Patron

“I was delighted to become Target TB’s first Patron. I am passionate about helping a small organisation like Target TB continue to make such important inroads towards addressing this huge, global problem." Felicity believes that it is vital to generate greater awareness about an infectious disease that sees nearly 9 million new cases emerge each year.

“I thought that TB belonged firmly in the past and so it horrified me when I heard that it’s more prevalent today than ever before. I think it’s an absolute tragedy that every year, nearly 2 million people die from such an easily preventable and curable disease. For relatively little money, around £40, someone in the developing world can be saved from TB and prevented from spreading it to up to 15 others. Please join me today in helping to stamp out TB for good with a donation or a regular gift. ”
