Walking the Walk for Target TB

We’ve had two wonderful walking weekends, raising over £1,500 to help us save lives across the world. Our very own Fundraising team and supporters Julie Carter, Stuart Tolley, Emily Crozier-Hayes and Jane Crozier walked 20km over the beautiful South Downs in May sunshine – maybe even a bit longer as some of them went a bit wrong at the end! In Derbyshire, the whole Weeks family and their friends walked a special 4km challenge in June. Not only did they raise funds for Target TB but they spurred on daughter Rebecca, aged 11, who chose to do the walk as a personal challenge after a major operation earlier this year. Everyone here at Target TB was truly inspired by Rebecca, shown here proudly showing off our orange t-shirts with her brother James! Well done everyone!  Read more from Rebecca's family.

Launch night at Infinity Foods Cafe

Our vibrant photo exhibition Hope – Stories from India launched at Infinity Foods Café in Brighton on Wednesday, 5th May. Dozens of supporters, volunteers and well-wishers attended to celebrate our life-saving work in India and learn more about real places and people we have met there. The photographs, shown as part of the Fringe Festival, highlight the work Target TB is doing to provide people with quality diagnosis and treatment for TB around the world.

A whopping £160 was raised in the raffle, largely because of the brilliant prizes on offer! Many thanks to Helen at Food for Chefs for donating a wonderful hamper; Unlimited Editions for generously donating a graphic illustration of Brighton; Chris from Courvoisier for a delicious set of ingredients and cocktail recipe; and of course to Andie and everyone at the Infinity Foods Café for all their help, and the use of the space.

We hope this show will bring our neighbours closer to the people they could help by supporting Target TB this year. The exhibition will be on show in Brighton until the 30th June.

Brighton Marathon Success!

Everyone here at Target TB is hugely proud of our brave runner in the very first Brighton Marathon which took place in warm sunshine on 18th April. Patrick McGuigan challenged himself to complete the course in four hours and he did just that - give or take 37 seconds! Even better, he managed to raise nearly £1,000 for Target TB, to help us continue our fight against the disease. We can't do our work without people like him.

World TB Day 2010

Target TB

In honour of World TB Day this year, Target TB, together with the UK Coalition to Stop TB, hosted a photography
exhibition in Westminster: ‘Hope – stories from India’.

India has the highest incidence of infectious TB in the world. Each year, around 1.8 million
new cases emerge, equating to 1,000 men, women and children losing their lives to TB
every single day. In October 2009, Sophie Davies, Head of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications
for Target TB, travelled to north west India with professional photographer David Brunetti to document
the impact of India’s TB problem on some of the country’s most marginalised communities.
This exhibition displayed some of the most informative and poignant images in order to raise
awareness of, and advocate for, TB control in India.

The event also launched the UK Coalition’s 2010 campaign ‘TB: A disease of the past? Action Now!’
which combined a series of activities to make a high impact statement to the UK Government about
the need and importance of prioritising TB on the domestic and global health agenda. The Coalition
also released its TB manifesto ‘TB Election Asks’ with the foreword supported and signed by Archbishop
Desmond Tutu. With the elections coming up, it’s hoped that this will help to generate the political will
of the UK Government to take immediate action on TB.

Now that World TB Day has passed this year, the ‘Hope – stories from India’ exhibition will move to the Infinity Cafe on Gardner Street in the north Laine of Brighton and will be open to all. The images will be on display every day from 1st to 23rd May and were produced with the generous sponsorship of the following local companies:  Mazars LLP, Charles Stanley & Co Ltd, South East Mailing and
Fulfilment, Red Rooster Digital Design and Chilli Pickle.

Target TB believes that 2010 is a critical year to demonstrate the UK’s commitment to global health –
there are just five years to go to meet the health Millennium Development Goals. At current levels of
funding and progress, the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on TB will not be met.

The UK government can play a central role in ensuring that it is.On World TB Day, 24 March 2010 Clare Shaw,
Target TB Programme Officer and Kibble Ngalauka, (pictured above) Project Manager of our partner Sue Ryder

in Malawi, delivered a list of ‘TB asks’ to 10 Downing Street - asking the UK Government to make TB a priority
on the UK’s domestic and global health agendas.Check out the UK Coalition's website (link above) to see the full
manifesto from 24th March onwards.

Papermates help Target TB

Target TBLocal volunteers are a vital resource for a small organisation like Target TB and one of our most loyal groups is a Day Service initiative, supporting people with learning disabilities who want to offer their skills to community projects and local organisations.

This hard-working team of volunteers, Papermates, do a fantastic job of helping us package and post our bi-annual newsletter to over a 1,000 supporters. Target TB really appreciates the time and effort the group put towards this important mailing as with their help, the whole task is completed in a fraction of the time !

As well as working with Target TB, the group is also involved in other activities including community recycling projects, and catering at local events.
