Policy

Target TB strives to ensure that the voices of local people are heard far beyond their community and that their needs are not only heard but addressed by decision and policy makers.

We work with local partners, national and international networks involved in the fight against TB. Together, we seek to influence those in positions of power to bring about lasting changes that will make a real difference to the health and welfare millions of people affected by TB all around the world.

Through these networks we advocate for increased political commitment and resources to strengthen global TB control efforts.

We are members of: Global Stop TB Partnership, the UK Coalition to Stop TB and the UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development. We are also involved with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Global Tuberculosis.

Influencing policy in other countries

We actively encourage and build the capacity of our local partners to influence decision makers in their own countries for improved TB services.

In India, for example, in the States of Jharkhand, Orissa and Tamil Nadu, two of our partners are implementing a four year project funded by the Department for International Development to empower the poor and marginalised with information on their rights and entitlements to TB. Through building local people’s voices in decision making forums, they will be able to hold government to account for the effective implementation of programme and policy commitments on TB control.

World TB Day, 24 March 2010 Clare Shaw, Target TB Programme Officer and Kibble Ngalauka, Project Manager of our partner Sue Ryder in Malawi, delivered a list of ‘TB asks’ to 10 Downing Street, asking the Government to make TB a priority.

Influencing policy in the UK

Through participation in networks such as the UK Coalition to Stop TB, Target TB works with many different UK based organisations and individuals to influence key decision makers on urgent issues around TB control in the UK and internationally.

For example, in March 2010 we launched a campaign to make a high impact statement to the UK government about the need and importance of prioritising TB on the domestic and global health agenda. This included producing a TB manifesto ‘TB Election Asks’, encouraging the main political parties to review their policies on TB in the build up to the general election.
